Designing with chairs

I have always had a fascination with and love of chairs (which may stem from having my very own wee little rocking chair as a child). Anything from the traditional Chippendale to the modern classic Barcelona chair, makes me want to run over and make myself at home in it. In a living room setting, sometimes the chairs get second billing to the sofa but I like to make them an integral part of the setting.

Chairs are a fabulous decorating tool. They can be used in a grouping or just all by themselves. A sofa and two chairs in a conversation area gives much more flexibility in arranging the grouping than a sofa/ loveseat combination and the chairs become more of a design element in the space. The recent trend of having a grouping of chairs around a cocktail table instead of a sofa at all is a great look and gives each person their own personal space without having to sit right next to someone on a sofa.

An accent chair that is placed in a corner for reading, next to the hearth in winter, by a piano for listening or next to the entry for waiting, can be a fabulous place to add a little excitement to the space by using a bright accent color for the fabric or using a totally different finish on the wood. As with a piece of art, a very contemporary style chair or a chair with a very wild fabric application can be thrown into a traditional setting to add a wonderful splash. I love to see classic Wingbacks dressed in a fuchsia floral fabric for a teenager’s room, a Berger chair in a Cowhide across from the desk or the modern classic Saarinen tulip chair at the nook.

Custom made upholstery enables us to create a space that is uniquely yours by giving us flexibility in fabric and design. This also gives us the opportunity to find the manufacturer that will be within your budget. Over the years, I have found outstanding local manufacturers to give my clients the best quality and value for custom upholstery, as well as, draperies, bedding and custom case goods. Purchasing from local manufacturers saves on shipping costs and possible damage in shipping so I prefer to shop locally whenever possible.
